Innovation of A System and Method for Automated Construction Planning, Design Generation, And Resource Estimation

Pandu Sowkuntla researchDr Pandu Sowkuntla, an Assistant Professor in Department of Computer Science and Engineering, SRM AP, along with Mr Dhiraj Kumar Raut and Mr Gopala Krishna Arla (PhD Scholar) has innovated A System and Method for Automated Construction Planning, Design Generation, And Resource Estimation, and is formally recognised by patent publication in the Indian Patent Office Journal.

This research develops a smart system that helps in planning buildings automatically. Instead of manually designing layouts and calculating materials, the system takes basic inputs like land size and requirements, then creates an optimized building design. It also calculates the materials, labour, and cost needed for construction. If any changes are made, the system instantly updates everything. In simple terms, it works like an intelligent assistant for architects and builders, making construction planning faster, easier, and more accurate.

Abstract

This research presents an artificial intelligence-based system for automated construction planning, building design generation, and resource estimation. The system integrates AI-driven layout generation with design-linked material and labour estimation and dynamic real-time recalculation within a unified intelligent framework. It automatically generates optimised building layouts from user inputs and computes construction resources and cost estimates. The system improves planning accuracy, reduces manual effort, minimizes estimation errors, and enhances decision-making efficiency in construction projects.

Practical Implementation & Social Implications

This system can be implemented as a construction planning software or cloud-based platform used by architects, engineers, contractors, and real estate developers. It can automate building design, material estimation, and cost calculation in a single system, reducing manual work and errors.

From a social perspective, it improves efficiency in construction projects, reduces material wastage, lowers costs, and supports better planning decisions. It also makes construction planning accessible to non-experts, helping small builders and individuals design buildings without requiring advanced technical skills. Overall, it contributes to sustainable and cost-effective construction practices.

Future Research Plans

Future work will focus on extending the system to include real-time market price integration, 3D visualisation of building designs, and cloud-based scalable deployment. The system can be enhanced with advanced AI models for better layout optimisation and integrated with BIM/CAD tools for broader industry adoption. Additionally, incorporating region-specific construction rules and expanding to large-scale infrastructure planning will further improve its applicability and performance.
