Session on Industrial Decarbonisation: From GHG Accounting to Net Zero Roadmap

Industrial Decarbonisation SessionThe Department of Environmental Science and Engineering organised an expert session on “Industrial Decarbonisation: From GHG Accounting to Net Zero Roadmap” . The session was delivered by Dr Lovelyn Theresa Innocent, a distinguished expert with experience in climate change, sustainability, and clean energy.

The event provided a overview of greenhouse gas accounting frameworks and emphasised the urgent need for decarbonisation across industrial sectors, particularly in hard-to-abate industries such as cement, steel, and aluminum. Key discussions highlighted the role of India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), carbon markets, and policy mechanisms in driving emission reductions and enabling a structured transition toward low-carbon development.

The speaker elaborated on sector-specific decarbonisation strategies, including energy efficiency improvements, adoption of alternative fuels, process optimization, and emerging technologies such as carbon capture. Case studies from international projects demonstrated practical implementation of carbon reduction initiatives and their associated environmental and economic benefits.

The session also addressed the roadmap to achieving net-zero emissions, underlining the importance of innovation, resource mobilisation, regulatory frameworks, and skilled professionals. Additionally, insights into career opportunities in carbon management, sustainability consulting, and international climate organisations were shared, encouraging students to pursue emerging roles in the green economy.

Overall, the event enhanced awareness and understanding of industrial decarbonisation pathways, equipping students with both technical knowledge and strategic perspectives necessary for contributing to global climate goals.
