Abstract

Trivalent dysprosium (Dy3+) incorporated B2O3-WO3-Na2O-Al2O3-ZnO (BW: Dy3+) glass matrices were formed via employing a melt quench procedure. The prepared BW: Dy3+ glasses were thoroughly examined in terms of their structural, morphological and optical characteristics to assess their suitability for advanced optoelectronic systems. The characteristic of a broad diffraction pattern proved the non-crystalline nature of BW glass. The morphological characteristics for BW: Dy3+ glass was examined via SEM micrograph. Dy3+ ions doped BW glasses exhibit a number of absorption peaks spanning the ultraviolet to near infrared region, with the evaluated indirect optical band gap lying in the range of 3.61–3.76 eV. BW: Dy3+ glasses exhibit numerous excitation peaks in 300–500 nm range. Under excitations at 351, 365, and 387 nm, the Dy3+ ions doped BW glasses produce three prominent visible emission peaks attributed to the transitions 4F9/2 → 6H15/2 (Blue), 4F9/2 → 6H13/2 (yellow) and 4F9/2 → 6H11/2 (Red). The colorimetric features suggest that the coordinates were located in the bright white zone. The decay time curves for Dy3+ ions doped BW glasses demonstrated the exponential characteristics with an average decay time in the millisecond (ms) range. Temperature induced PL characteristics designate that the produced glasses are excellent, thermally stable having 0.217 eV activation energy. The explored structural, morphological and optical characteristics of Dy3+ ions doped BW glasses demonstrated that the prepared white light-emitting glasses can be directly applicable to numerous advanced photonic devices.
