Abstract

The family of tapered slot antennas (TSA), has good electrical performance including gain, relatively low side lobes, a circular symmetric main beam and practically constant impedance over a broad frequency band. Fabrication on thin, flexible substrates allows the TSA to be conformed over a given body, such as an aircraft wing or a piece of clothing for wearable network. Impedance matching is a major issue in this type of antenna and to surmount the impedance matching difficulty, a TSA with antipodal geometry is introduced in this present work. One of the advantages of the antipodal geometry is that the designer does not need to layout any stubs on the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) to achieve impedance matching. Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) feeding technique allows us to design all the attributes of antenna system upon a common substrate and provides a high Q-factor. Therefore, this study focuses on the design of Antipodal Linear Taper Slot Antenna (ALTSA) with SIW technique using CST Microwave Studio (CST MWS) simulation tool to provide a detailed simulations operating at 60 GHz. The size of the proposed antenna is very compact (44.61mm × 9.93mm × 0.381mm) and the substrate used is RT/DUROID 5880. © 2013 IEEE.
