Abstract
Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) aims at adding information and communication technologies to transportation infrastructures and vehicles to improve safety and efficiency. Wireless communications play the inevitable role in ITS and provide a platform for the exchange of data among the vehicles. Circularly polarized penta-band planar spiral antenna with tapered feed is presented to aid vehicular communications. The antenna covers navigational frequencies viz., 1.2 GHz, 1.5 GHz and Wireless Communication frequencies viz., 2.45 GHz, 3.3 GHz and Dedicated Short Range Communication frequency 5.8 GHz for the Vehicle-Vehicle communications. The Antenna is designed and simulated with Electromagnetic (EM) simulation tool and validated with Radio Frequency equipment. The suitability of the proposed antenna for vehicular communications is validated through the radio link analysis on the line of sight, and the non-line of sight scenarios utilizing EM computations and path loss models.
