Abstract
Tungsten carbide (WC) is used for a wide range of applications. It is normally fabricated through the liquid-phase sintering at higher temperatures using Co or its alloy as a binder. The present investigation aims to lower the sintering temperature of WC powders using CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) as a binder, which has a relatively lower liquidus temperature. WC powder with 10 wt.% of HEA was hot pressed at 1300 °C and obtained a good sintered density. Analysis of the microstructure reveals the dissolution of base WC on the HEA phase during sintering. A high compressive strength of 3550 ± 435 MPa with reasonably good hardness of 1850 ± 29 HV of sintered samples suggests that the HEA could be a good binder for the sintering of hard carbide powders.
