Abstract

Abdul Ghaffar Khan, popularly known as Bachcha Khan and Badshah Khan, was one of the Indian nationalist leaders who fought against British rule, revived Pakhtoon nationalism and uplifted and empowered ‘Pathans’ socially and educationally. He is popularly referred to as ‘Frontier Gandhi’1 for his commitment to non-violence as the method of resistance against the oppressive British rule. Gaffar Khan’s ideas can be understood from his struggle against the British and efforts to change his own Pakhtoon society. He did not responded in writing to the political questions of his time. However, a number of his biographies and speeches are available. One of the most authoritative biographies is D. G. Tendulkar’s Abdul Ghaffar Khan: Faith Is a Battle, 1967.
