Abstract
Several designs of non-polarized coupling coils for wireless power transfer (WPT) systems are available, such as flat circular and rectangular coils. However, they typically have limited power transfer capacities and are restricted to shorter distances. This paper presents the design and development of a double pancake spiral coil-based WPT system. The polarized coil is made using two flat pancake-type coils connected in series with additive polarity to enhance the magnetic field density. The steps for designing the coil structure are discussed in detail. The FEM analysis for measuring the self and mutual inductances of coil structure at different distances is done in Ansys Maxwell 14.0 software. These inductance values are also verified through the developed experimental setup. The setup operates at different distances and switching frequencies to observe variations in the efficiency of power transfer.
