Prof. Mohanty is a distinguished academic, researcher, and academic leader with more than 30 years of experience in higher education, research, and academic administration in India and the United States. His extensive academic and research career spans Artificial Intelligence, Smart Electronic Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and Cyber-Physical Systems, with a strong focus on developing intelligent, secure, and sustainable
technologies for the future.
Prof. Mohanty completed his foundational education in Electrical Engineering at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, followed by an M.E. in Systems Science and Automation from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of South Florida, USA. He began his professional career as an Adjunct Professor at Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology and subsequently worked as a Trainee Manager at Orissa Mining Corporation, India.
During his doctoral studies in the United States, he served as an Instructor and Teaching Assistant at the University of South Florida. He later joined the University of North Texas (UNT) as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and progressed through the academic ranks to become a Professor.
During his more than two decades at UNT, Prof. Mohanty held several academic leadership and governance responsibilities, including serving as the Founding Director of the Smart Electronic Systems Laboratory, Associate Chair/Head of Computer Engineering and Personnel Affairs Chair, and contributing extensively to faculty governance, academic administration, faculty development, strategic planning, accreditation, and institutional decision- making.
Prof. Mohanty has also contributed to leading academic institutions in India through distinguished academic appointments, including Distinguished Adjunct Professor at IIIT- Naya Raipur, Adjunct Faculty at MNIT Jaipur, and Honorary Visiting Professor at Oriental University, Indore.
Prof. Mohanty’s research focuses on Smart Electronic Systems, bringing together AI and Machine Learning, data analytics, IoT, cybersecurity, and edge intelligence to address emerging challenges in Cyber-Physical Systems and smart cities. His research portfolio includes more than 600 peer-reviewed publications, over 20,000 citations, an h-index of 68, more than US$4 million in competitive research funding, six granted patents, and five books.
His work has received broad international recognition and has contributed to advancing research at the intersection of intelligent computing, connected systems, and secure technologies.Throughout his career, Prof. Mohanty has mentored numerous undergraduate, postgraduate,doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers, helping develop the next generation of researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders. He is the recipient of more than 50 awards and honours recognising his contributions to research, teaching, and academic leadership.Among these are the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Award from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State in 2021 and the UNT Toulouse Scholars Award for exceptional achievements in scholarship and teaching.
As the Founding Dean of the Artificial Intelligence Technology Institute, Prof. Mohanty will lead the development of AiTI as a flagship interdisciplinary initiative of SRM University-AP. AiTI will focus on advancing AI education, interdisciplinary research, innovation, entrepreneurship, industry collaboration, and global partnerships, while promoting the responsible and impactful adoption of AI across the University.
