Abstract
This paper presents a new single-switch regenerative braking system designed for brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive based-light electric vehicles (EVs). The braking system is developed with the primary objective to minimize the braking time while keeping the battery current within operational limits. In conventional braking systems, a large current is drawn by the battery with sudden increment in the duty ratio of the inverter for during faster braking. This large amount of current can damage components and reduce braking efficiency and control stability. When using a new single-switch configuration, quickly stopping the motor is challenging as a small current is supplied by the motor. To solve this problem, this paper introduces a new control method that allows the BLDC motor to stop in a fraction of a second using only a single switch configuration, without drawing a large amount of current. The PWM duty ratio is dynamically adjusted by the proposed technique while braking, eliminating the process of manual adjustment for each brake event. The proposed method simplifies the circuit design, allowing a reduction in cost and complexity. The effectiveness of the proposed braking system is experimentally analysed using MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.
