Abstract
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, are being utilized more frequently in areas like surveillance, disaster response, and precision farming. Efficient collaboration among various UAVs demands a communication system that is reliable and has minimal latency. MAVLink is a popular lightweight protocol that facilitates the transmission of control commands, telemetry data, and mission information between UAVs and ground control stations. Nonetheless, the standard CRC-16 checksum employed in MAVLink provides minimal integrity protection and is prone to increased collision risks. To overcome this limitation, this study substitutes the CRC-16 mechanism with CRC-32, thus increasing the checksum range from 65,536 to nearly 4.29 billion potential values. Moreover, a batch processing method based on a lookup table (LUT) is utilized to boost computational efficiency. It achieves almost a 5% enhancement in performance with minimal CPU overhead while maintaining backward compatibility. The suggested edge- focused approach improves scalability, reduces the chance of collisions, and enhances message reliability in UAV communica- tion networks. Test outcomes show quicker checksum validation and enhanced dependability. In general, the framework facilitates smart, and resource-efficient communication at the edge, helps in error detection and increases message integrity.
