Abstract

Ensuring the durability of structures against blast impacts is crucial for protecting both infrastructure and human lives. This research investigates the response of two structural designs: one is a sandwich panel made of two stainless steel plates with an aluminum honeycomb core in between, and the other is a solid plate used as a comparative model. The sandwich panel features an Aluminum 5052-H39 honeycomb core sandwiched between high-ductility stainless steel plates (Al-6XN). The study utilizes the CONWEP (Conventional Weapons) blast model within Abaqus to simulate realistic blast effects. The steel components are modeled using the Johnson-Cook material model, while the properties of the honeycomb core are based on standard mechanical data. The blast source is positioned 100 mm above the test structure to replicate practical impact conditions. This study evaluates the effectiveness of each structural design in mitigating blast effects by analyzing energy absorption, deformation, and failure mechanisms. The lightweight honeycomb core is expected to improve impact resistance through enhanced energy dissipation. The findings aim to contribute to the development of more effective protective structures for military, aerospace, and civil engineering applications.
