Abstract

Recent advancements in transportation electrification have led to more demand of efficient and fast electric vehicles (EVs) charging infrastructure. To support fast charging of electric vehicles, modern EV charging stations utilize high-power DC-DC converters operating on high DC voltages. This paper presents the design of a Modular Multilevel DCDC Converter (M2DC) and compares two configurations: one incorporating dedicated arm inductor (M2DCL) and the other without arm inductor (M2DCNL ) to analyze their role in system behavior. The topologies are tested under identical operating conditions to evaluate and compare key parameters such as arm current, submodule (SM) capacitor voltage, load voltage, and load current. Both systems are tested in voltage control mode of operation. The comparitive analysis has been done on the basis of experimental results obtained from the scaled down prototype of M2DC.
