The Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRM University–AP, organised an Industry-Oriented One-Day Workshop on “Welding Processes & Quality Control” on January 30, 2026, to provide B.Tech./M.Tech. students, PhD research scholars, and faculty members with practical, industry-focused knowledge of welding technology, fabrication practices, inspection techniques, and quality control procedures used in core sectors such as pressure vessels and offshore engineering, thereby bridging the gap between academic learning and industrial requirements.
The workshop featured distinguished resource persons including Dr V R Krishnan, former senior professional at Engineers India Limited, New Delhi, an internationally recognised expert in materials technology, welding, corrosion, fabrication, and quality assurance with extensive experience in refinery, petrochemical, pipeline, and offshore industries; Dr Dipak K Chandiramani, former Senior Principal Specialist at Lloyd’s Register Asia, an authority in ASME pressure vessel codes, welding inspection, non-destructive testing, and design appraisal with vast global industrial and code compliance experience and Dr Chandan Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering at SRM University–AP, who contributed to the technical sessions and discussions to the program.
The technical sessions covered fundamentals and classification of welding processes, welding metallurgy and weld defects, preparation and qualification of welding procedure specifications, quality control and quality assurance in welding fabrication, non-destructive testing methods and inspection standards and the importance of compliance with ASME, API, and other international codes in welding and pressure vessel construction, during which the speakers shared real industrial experiences, failure analysis cases, and best practices adopted in major engineering projects.
The participants actively engaged in discussions, raised technical queries, and interacted with the experts on industrial challenges and career opportunities in welding engineering, quality assurance, quality control, and non-destructive testing.
The workshop was highly informative and strongly aligned with industry needs, with particular appreciation for the real-life case studies and direct interaction with senior industry professionals. The workshop successfully achieved its objective of delivering industry-oriented knowledge on welding processes and quality control, significantly enhancing participants’ technical competence and strengthening academia–industry interaction.
Dr Lakshmi Sirisha Maganti, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, delivered the welcome address, followed by an introductory speech by Prof. Gurumurthy Kagita, Professor of Practice, Department of Mechanical Engineering, SRM AP. The event was convened by Dr Chandan Kumar and Prof. Gurumurthy Kagita from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
