Abstract

The adoption of recommended sericulture practices among the seed rearers in the bivoltine seed area of Andhra Pradesh, India, promises to improve the quality and yield of the cocoon crop. A study was conducted in bivoltine seed area of Madakasira in Anantapur district, to determine the awareness and the use of various sericulture technologies among the seed rearers. The philosophy behind this study was based on the fact that locally generated seed cocoons perform better in later generations under the same conditions. The observations from the study revealed that middle aged persons are more actively involved in adopting sericulture practices as compared to that of old aged persons and marginal farmers. About 80% of marginal farmers were found to have six years of experience in sericulture, which is attributed to the advantages like technology absorption and cocoon crop stability. Based on the awareness levels among the seed rearers, 87% of seed rearers had a total knowledge, 11% had partial knowledge, and only 2% had no knowledge. Inspite of few hindrances, the adoption levels in the bivoltine seed area has resulted in crop success and stability due to dedicated efforts of field functionaries of Dept. of Sericulture.
