Abstract

Health of environment and humans depends a lot on remediation of contaminants and pollution control. Harnessing microbial potential for clean-up of environmental pollution has emerged as the most promising approach. Use of bacteria, fungi, yeast, and algae is generally done for bioremediation. They can be used as indigenous, single, mixed, or selective agent. With advances in molecular biology and process engineering; genetically engineered microbes for bioremediation were also developed and utilized. However, traditional approaches come with some limitations, thus exploration of alternative strategies using synthetic biology has come up with promising results. The chapter provides an outlook on potential applications of synthetic biology for bioremediation. Furthermore, it also gives substantial information about tools and techniques involved in the learning of systems biology and metabolic engineering to chalk out the strategy and optimization of microbial cells library for the bioremediation of pollutants at noteworthy level. The numerous omics-based tools of systems biology, such as genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and phenomics and computational tools for examination of data created from these techniques offer momentous information for understanding the composite performance of microbes which theaters a vital role in bioremediation.
