Abstract

The use of multimodal techniques in Bengali children’s literature can arguably be traced back to the early colonial attempts to make educational instruction more appealing to children through the rise of a steady visual and illustration culture. This article develops a historiographical take on the development of multimodality in Bengali children’s literature since the turn of the nineteenth century as these technological and textual developments paved the way for cosmopolitanism as well as greater engagement of the target readership, and the subtle reformation of child-rearing and pedagogic practices within the home.
