The Department of Mathematics hosted the International Conference on Language Diversity and Mathematics Education (LaDiME2025) from 25 to 28 November 2025. The four-day conference brought together distinguished international scholars, leading Indian researchers and emerging academics to examine how language shapes mathematical understanding in a multilingual nation like India.
The event was graced by Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Ch Satish Kumar, Prof. C V Tomy (Dean, SEAS), Prof. Ranjit Thapa (Dean, Research), along with faculty, scholars, and students. Addressing the gathering, Honourable VC Prof. Ch. Satish Kumar emphasised that to nurture intelligence and holistic development, institutions must introduce mathematical thinking at an early age. He highlighted the timeless relevance of mathematics and its role in shaping analytical, strategic, and structured minds.
With keynote lectures by globally renowned experts including Prof. Susanne Prediger, Prof. Nuria Planas, Prof. Marta Civil and Prof. Anthony Essien, the event presented cutting-edge insights into the intersections of language, culture and mathematical cognition. Invited talks by eminent linguists and educators further enriched discussions on issues such as multilinguality, sociopolitical influences on learning and the challenges faced by indigenous learners.
Across review panels, paper presentations and thematic discussions, participants explored language in mathematics textbooks, teacher education, empirical research practices and the role of English in higher mathematical learning. The conference concluded with a collaborative dialogue on future directions, including the proposal to develop a publication featuring the presented research and to initiate follow-up studies and events.
The conference received an enthusiastic response from all participants and served as a significant step toward strengthening India’s research ecosystem in mathematics education and advancing inclusive, context-sensitive approaches to learning.
