The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering hosted an insightful guest lecture by Shri Anand Kumar Sharma, an eminent meteorologist from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on January 20, 2026. Currently serving as the President of the Indian Meteorological Society (IMS) and the Regional Coordinator for the Western and Central Himalayas and Scientist-F at the AASD Unit, New Delhi, he shared his vast expertise in Weather Prediction and Early Warning of Extreme Weather Systems and Disaster Management.

His talk titled “Extreme Weather Events: Monitoring, Prediction and Early Warning for a Sustainable Future” offered a compelling discussion on weather-based risk awareness, the dynamic nature of weather, and natural climate variability—highlighting the critical role of science in building a sustainable future.

Shri Anand highlighted the various components involved in the early warning system to prevent natural disasters and effectively contribute to disaster management – shedding light upon advanced tech like satellites, radar, AI/ML, and supercomputers for real-time observation, forecasting etc. He emphasised on the need of early warning systems to enable preparedness, significantly reducing disaster impacts and loss of life.
