The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering organised an expert guest lecture titled “Valorization of Lignin and Nanolignin for Various Applications,” presented by Prof. Widya Fatriasari from the Research Center for Biomass and Bioproducts at BRIN, Bioproducts-Based Polyphenol Research Group. The lecture designed for students and scholars helped enable them to gain insights into the latest research and applications of lignin and nanolignin, enhancing their knowledge of sustainable materials and their potential uses in various industries.
Dr Widya Fatriasari a distinguished professor at the Research Center for Biomass and Bioproducts, BRIN, Indonesia with a strong focus on the valorisation of natural fibers, lignin, and cellulose for bioproducts elaborated on the scope and emerging opportunities highlighting its transformation into high-value bioproducts. She provided detailed insights, supported by statistical data, on the conversion of lignin and nanolignin into sustainable materials for applications in bioplastics, adhesives, antioxidants, UV-protective coatings, pharmaceuticals, and energy storage systems, underscoring their potential as eco-friendly alternatives to petroleum-based products.
The lecture concluded with Qand A session where faculties and students raised relevant questions with regard to the subject. The session was followed by Dr Shoji D Thottathil, Head of the Department presenting Prof. Fatriasari with a token of appreciation.
