Back to Roots: Sustainable Hydration, SDG project by Management students

Back to Roots is a student-led sustainability initiative by second year, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students focused on promoting eco-friendly hydration through the use of handmade clay water bottles. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship, the project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production).

Project Vision

The core objective of Back to Roots is to reduce dependence on plastic bottles while encouraging mindful and responsible consumption. By reviving the use of clay bottles, the project also aims to empower local artisans, preserve indigenous skills, and support sustainable livelihoods.

Research & Methodology

The PSB students adopted a comprehensive research-driven approach, which included:

  • Primary research through consumer surveys and in-depth interviews with clay artisans
  • Secondary research involving market analysis and sustainability trends
  • Competitor analysis to understand positioning within the eco-friendly product space
  • Prototype development of a handmade clay bottle

Key Findings

The research revealed strong consumer interest in sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. However, price sensitivity and product fragility emerged as key challenges that need to be addressed for broader market adoption.

Outcomes & Deliverables

The project successfully delivered:

  • A functional clay bottle prototype
  • SWOT Analysis
  • Business Model Canvas (BMC)
  • A detailed market research report
  • A comprehensive final presentation highlighting insights and impact

Impact

Back to Roots demonstrates how Paari School of Business (PSB) students can integrate traditional craftsmanship with modern sustainability principles to offer a healthier, environmentally responsible alternative to plastic hydration solutions. The project highlights the power of conscious consumer choices in driving positive social, economic, and environmental change.
