7th Eminent Guest Lecture by Prof. G Narhari Sastry at SRM AP: Exploring AI in Natural Sciences and Engineering

The Office of Dean- Research at SRM University- AP successfully conducted the 7th Eminent Guest Lecture on “Artificial Intelligence in Natural Sciences and Engineering,” bringing together students, researchers, and faculty for an insightful academic exchange. The session featured Dr G Narahari Sastry, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Hyderabad, as the eminent speaker.

The lecture offered a comprehensive perspective on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in shaping modern scientific research and engineering practices. Dr Sastry traced the journey of technological advancement alongside human development, emphasizing how innovations over the ages have consistently transformed the way societies learn, heal, and progress. He highlighted how AI has emerged as a powerful tool that complements human intelligence rather than replacing it.

A significant portion of the talk focused on AI applications in healthcare, where data-driven models, predictive analytics, and machine learning are enabling faster diagnoses, personalized treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes. Dr Sastry also addressed the growing influence of generative AI, underlining the need for responsible usage, ethical awareness, and informed adoption of these technologies in academia and industry.

Quoting the philosopher-statesman Dr S. Radhakrishnan, Dr Sastry remarked, “Education is nothing but awareness,” reinforcing the idea that meaningful learning lies in understanding, critical thinking, and conscious application of knowledge. This message resonated strongly with the audience, aligning well with the university’s vision of holistic education and research-driven growth.

The interactive session was convened by Dr Mahesh Kumar Ravva, Assistant Dean (Research) and Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry, in the presence of Dr Ranjit Thapa, Dean- Research, Dr Chebrolu Pulla Rao, Senior Professor, Department of Chemistry, along with other university dignitaries, scholars, and students. The session witnessed active participation, thoughtful questions, and meaningful interdisciplinary dialogue. It provided an enriching platform for participants to engage with emerging ideas and gain a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence is redefining innovation across natural sciences and engineering. The lecture reaffirmed SRM University- AP’s commitment to academic excellence and forward-looking research.
