Plastics Off Campus is a sustainability-focused academic project led by second-year, Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) students, addressing the impact of single-use plastic consumption on campus and its connection to SDG 13: Climate Action.
Project Overview
The project examines everyday plastic usage patterns among students and staff, highlighting how routine consumption contributes to larger environmental and climate challenges. By linking daily habits to climate action, the study aims to promote awareness and drive responsible behavioural change within the campus community.
Research Focus & Methodology
The team conducted a detailed assessment to understand:
- The frequency and nature of single-use plastic usage on campus
- Awareness levels regarding sustainability initiatives and environmental impact
- Barriers to adopting reusable alternatives, such as convenience and accessibility
Data was collected through surveys and observations, with a focus on food and beverage areas where plastic consumption was found to be the highest.
Key Findings
While the majority of students and staff are aware of the environmental consequences of plastic waste, the research revealed that these risks are often not perceived as immediately urgent. Convenience, lack of readily available alternatives, and limited infrastructure continue to drive high plastic usage, particularly in dining and refreshment zones.
Outcomes & Insights
The study emphasises the need for:
- Stronger incentives to encourage sustainable choices
- Improved infrastructure for reusable and waste-segregation systems
- Accessible and affordable reusable options across campus
These measures are essential to enable meaningful and long-term behavioural change aligned with climate action goals.
Impact
Plastics Off Campus highlights how targeted interventions and institutional support can significantly reduce plastic dependency and contribute to climate-conscious campuses. The project reinforces the role of students as active contributors to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
