In contemporary research environment, the application of rigorous and advanced methodologies is crucial for generating impactful and policy-relevant insights. Acknowledging the growing demand for methodological proficiency among students, research scholars, and practitioners, The Department of Economics organised a 5-day national workshop on “Econometrics and Large-Scale Data Analysis for Social Science Research” on October 13-17, 2025. The intensive workshop on modern econometric methods and data analysis was designed to build and enhance both conceptual foundations and hands-on expertise of participants in applied econometrics.

The workshop was attended by 56 participants from the six zones of the country, across different disciplines, including economics, finance, management, computer science, development studies, and commerce doctoral scholars, postgraduate students, faculty members, and government agencies. This made the workshop serve as an interdisciplinary platform that fosters critical thinking and diverse technical perspective for evidence-based research skills among participants.

The inaugural session was graced by the Vice Chancellor (I/C) – Prof. Ch. Satish Kumar, Registrar Dr R Premkumar, Dean-ESLA – Prof. Vishnupad, Dr Manish Kumar – Head of Economics Department. Prof. Satish Kumar highlighted the growing importance of data processing and analytics in generating meaningful social and economic insights. Dr Prajukta Tripathy, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, gave overview of the workshop, by highlighting the objectives and five-day structure.

The sessions on Cross-sectional data were facilitated by Dr Dinamani Biswal, an expert in large-scale microdata and an Assistant Professor of Economics from National Institute of Technology, Silchar. Dr Dinamani provided participants’ both theoretical grounding and hands-on training in econometric modelling of large-scale data with emphasis on India National Sample and Human Development Surveys.

The sessions on Time-series data were facilitated by Dr Anoop S Kumar, a seasoned applied time-series modeler from Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation, Thiruvananthapuram. His sessions covered foundational theoretical knowledge of time-series data, their properties, modelling approaches, and practical using financial data of 26 years.

The panel data segment was divided into two technical parts and featured intensive sessions by Prof. Badri Narayan Rath from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. The first part of the session provided the participants with the rudiments of panel data, including the introduction to data sets, panel data structure, problems involved in modelling panel data, and introduction to panel estimators (linear and dynamic). The other session of the segment focused on practical, where dataset was shared with participants and various panel models such as Fixed Effects, Random Effects, Difference and System Generalized Method of Moments and Panel Time Series Analyses were estimated with interpretation.

The workshop was successful, and the knowledge gained strengthened participants’ research capabilities and fostered knowledge sharing in econometric methods and beyond. The workshop activities were aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoted and reaffirmed SRM University–AP’s initiative and commitment to fostering research excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and nurturing analytical minds for a data-driven and sustainable future.
