Non-Resident Indian (NRI)

An Indian citizen who resides outside India for more than 182 days in a financial year, typically for employment, business, or education purposes

Students who are Indian citizens residing in India but are financially sponsored by a first-degree relative who is an NRI.

Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) (Merged with OCI)

A person of Indian origin who was a citizen of another country. As of 2015, all PIO cards have been merged with OCI cards.
